Wayanad is Kerala’s wildest district — a high-altitude landscape of coffee and tea estates, tribal communities, ancient cave temples, and some of the most intact forest cover remaining in the Western Ghats. Bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the far north of Kerala, it is cooler, greener, and less visited than the state’s more famous destinations. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary adjoins Nagarhole and Bandipur, making this one of the largest contiguous forest ecosystems in South Asia. Come for the mist. Stay for the coffee, the cardamom, the elephants on the road at dawn, and the particular quality of a Kerala hill district that has not yet fully surrendered to its own tourism.
