Gwalior is one of Madhya Pradesh’s most historically layered cities — a place where the rock fortress that Babur called the pearl amongst fortresses of Hind towers above a city of Mughal tombs, Maratha palaces, and the musical legacy of Tansen, the greatest court musician of Akbar’s era. The Gwalior Fort, Jai Vilas Palace, and the extraordinary medieval temples carved from the rock face are the obvious attractions. The street food of the bazaars, the Tansen Music Festival, and the particular pleasure of a city that takes its own history seriously make the longer stay worth every day.
