Chandigarh is India’s most distinctively planned city — Le Corbusier’s masterpiece, a grid of sectors and boulevards, the Capitol Complex, the Rock Garden built from broken crockery, and Sukhna Lake on the edge of the Shivalik foothills. But Chandigarh is also the gateway to something larger: the first ridges of the Himalayas rise within an hour of the city, forested, wildlife-rich, and almost entirely unvisited.
